Initially, in the first half of XX century, bachata was considered vulgar daughter of poor classes, the songs of beggary areas narrating of pauper’s problems, one-way love and other life misfortunes. The term « bachatero» was used for everyone who liked this music and it was regarded degrading. It is not surprising that bachata was called «mъsica de amargue»– the music of bitterness. The lyrics relate of sufferings from unrequited love. Musically bachata is the mixture of bolero and Dominican sone. The unique feature of bachata is the lack of “clave” rhythm (percussion instrument) that proves its distinctive Dominican origin.

The 80-s of XX century became critical time in the history of bachata. Heretofore bachata had been used by the singers of so called “alternative music” only. They sang these sad songs at the parties as a sort of abreaction. Eventually, musicians realized that bachata is excellent way to show love experience, romantic mood and nostalgia.

Nowadays bachata is so popular in Dominican Republic that no disco, party or holiday can do without it. As time goes by this music has become closer to west standards. Now people in the USA, Mexico, Spain and many other countries are dancing and listening to bachata.
